The month of April is a great month to sit at home and catch up on all the movies and shows you’ve been meaning to watch; particularly now as the world continues to battle COVID-19 and we all practice social-distancing for the health of our communities. But, if you’re like many of us, you may have already blown through your need-to-watch list and now you’re looking for ways to expand your cinematic horizons. We wanted to help out, so in honor of 4/20(20) we put together a sampling of stoner movies for your viewing pleasure.

What’s a Stoner Movie?

Many folks consider “stoner movie” to be a specific genre of films that star Pauly Shore or Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. Others consider anything you watch while stoned a stoner movie. We’re meeting somewhere in the middle with this list; featuring different categories of stoner movies and pairing them with the perfect weed to enhance your stoner movie experience.

The Classics

We’ll start off with the classics. These films have forged the way for countless comedies in the stoner genre. For these movies, cannabis use is usually a major theme of the film if it isn’t an outright part of the plot. These movies started appearing in the late 70s and early 80s and have continued their place in popular culture ever since.

We’re pairing these classic stoner movies with a strain known for its sedative and cerebral effects. OG Story from Desert Grown Farms is believed to be a cross between Chemdog and Hindu Kush; the result is a heavy-hitting indica that provides a euphoric high perfect for melting into the couch and enjoying some classic reefer flicks.

Dank Docs

There’s  nothing quite like getting ripped and watching a nature documentary. High definition slow-motion looks even better when you’re baked. Here’s a list of some documentaries, some nature some not, for your viewing pleasure.

These documentaries are great on their own, but a little cannabis really helps you focus on the stories and information. We suggest the Durban Poison Preroll from Silver State Relief for this list. Durban Poison is a pure sativa originating from South Africa. It’s known for its uplifting effects and for a mellow but energizing high, great for binge-watching these dank docs.

Medicated Musicals

Musicals are great stoner movies because you can both relax and sing along, making it feel like you’re doing bad karaoke with your best friends. Here’s a list of musicals to watch while you’re stoned to the bone and can’t carry a tone.

To keep your singing voice in tip-top shape, we recommend a tasty Huckleberry Gummy by Wyld. Wyld is well-known in the Pacific North-west for their delicious gummies made with natural fruit flavors. They have several varieties of gummies and chocolates as well as sparkling CBD beverages.

It’s Not Funny, It’s Art

Have you ever watched a movie that made you say “wtf?” Maybe it was for an assignment in an art class in college or something that one friend with the unique haircut asked you to sit through with them. This is a list of those kinds of movies. If you thought they were weird before, just wait until you’re watching them while also contemplating what color a mirror is.

An Oldie, But A Goodie

Last but not least in our round-up of movies to watch while stoned are some classic films worth revisiting. Take a step back in time with these movies made long before cannabis legalization was ever thought possible and relish in the comforts of the modern era.

Nothing is better than classic movies with some warm freshly-popped popcorn. For this special 4/20 movie night, we suggest topping your favorite popcorn with just a little bit of cannabutter and maybe some chili powder if you’re feeling spicy. Don’t have any cannabutter handy? Don’t worry, we’ll teach you how to make it. If you’re looking for something a little less buttery, we suggest the Dried Pineapples from Cannabella.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our guide to stoner movies and feel better equipped to social distance. Remember to consume responsibly, both movies and cannabis.
