Introducing the Be Good People lineAugust 5, 2020
At Blackbird, our mission is to be good people and help good people, every day. In service to our mission, we want to use our platform to raise money for organizations doing important work. We also want to raise awareness around the issues those organizations work on. We created the Be Good People (BGP) line to raise money for non-profits and other organizations working for good in our communities. The BGP line will always include one Be Good People design and designs that highlight the orgs or causes we are supporting. Profits from the items sold through the BGP line will be donated to the organization identified by our staff.
Be Good People + The Last Prisoner Project
For our initial launch of the Be Good People line, our staff chose the Last Prisoner Project, a non-profit that seeks the full freedom of people incarcerated for cannabis and bringing restorative justice to the communities most affected by cannabis prohibition. The LPP is values-aligned with Blackbird; one of Blackbird’s core values is that cannabis should be legal, which explicitly connects with LPP’s values.
“We believe that anyone profiting from or freely engaging in the legal cannabis industry has a moral imperative to work towards restorative justice. No one should remain incarcerated or continue to suffer the collateral consequences of prohibition and the War on Drugs which has and continues to disproportionately impact communities of color.”
From Last Prisoner Project's stated values
The Last Prisoner Project is a coalition of cannabis experts, executives and artists. The LPP coalition aims to make responsible cannabis policy with a focus on restorative justice. The LPP has a multi-faceted approach to their work that includes policy reform, legislative advocacy, and direct service programs including release, reentry, and scholarships for job training.
In addition to first BGP line, the Last Prisoner Project is the recipient of Blackbird's quarterly employee donation program. Blackbird employees can donate their pocket change or make donations directly from their paycheck to the LPP through the end of September. Blackbird matches all employee donations made up to $5,000 a quarter.
