Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system. The body makes protective fatty cells that surround the spinal cord and brain. With MS, the body attacks those protective fatty cells, which results in permanent neurological damage that has both physical and psychological effects. Basically, MS is — more often than not — extremely painful.

Blackbird interviewed one of our favorite regulars, Jimi "The Purple Lady" Bufkin, before her move to an assisted living facility. Jimi struggles with Multiple Scelorsis and has found medicating with marijuana helps ease the pain as well as to increase her appetite.

Jimi can no longer drive due to a number of symptoms that have increased in severity in recent years, so she orders her medicine through Blackbird for delivery. Often times, if in the throes of an MS attack, she'll have to ask a neighbor or friend to open the child proof packaging for her.

Jimi also really, really loves purple. You can call her "The Purple Lady" — often imitated, never duplicated.
